[...] It’s worship at Newspring Church. [...]
My name is Mike Andersen. My phone number is 360.224.5713. I am 29 years old. I would like to know how you reconcile your despicable actions with the Word of God.
Repent of this outright rebellion against God! Get the God-forsaken magazine page of that girl off the so called “sanctuary.” What is wrong with you sex crazed “leaders?” Repent!!!!!!
This is demonic.
This is sickening. Repent!!!
Was there a message in there? It looked so much like the rest of the world, I couldn’t find it.
“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.” 1Thessalonians 4
Just teach them God’s word. It will not come back void, but your slick packaging WILL. Pray!
A message to those who claimed that there was nothing here: The man preached a sermon after the band stopped playing. Perhaps you turned off the video before the sermon started. I wonder if you listened to the speaker. I came here via a link from a site that was critical of this message. I came with a critical spirit and was surprised at the truth that was given by this presentation. This message needs to be heard. Wake up!
[...] This is not from MTV or the Playboy Channel. This is from New Spring Church’s YOUTH MINISTRY. [...]
People, please watch the whole program, or most of it, before you pass any judgement. I am a little embarassed because I came here with prejudice, having been directed here from another site.
Apparently, this church has concluded that “the end justifies the means” as if the packaging of a product in our current culture was insignificant. Phooey! Packaging is EVERYTHING! Nowadays, the nature of the packaging is just as important, if not more so, than the product inside. How many never get beyond the package to see the content? I’ll tell you how many; it’s the same number as those who never get past a headline to read the content of an article in a newspaper or website. We are a soundbite society.
The message of the packaging alone can be extremely distructive if it maligns the name and character of our savior.
What do churches like this DO with verses like this one??
“Abstain from all appearance of evil.” 1 Thes 5:22
But then, Paul didn’t live in our present culture so he must’ve been incapable of understanding these things when he wrote this.
This doesn’t Look a thing like Church!!!
“I believe that one reason why the church of God at this present moment has so little influence over the world is because the world has so much influence over the church.” —C. H. Spurgeon (1834-1892)
It is a shame when people who profess to be christians feel that they must package a good message in a way that shocks the believer and shows the non-believer we are not really different than the world. We are not of this world!!! We are new creatures. Everyday when I am at work, I take grief and ridicule from people that know me well and they know what I believe. That is because I am in the world, but not of it. I am a staunch conservative and I am a christian because of Jesus. Every Christian still battles the flesh. Scott’s posting says volumes about the appearance of evil. You will smell like the company you keep. No matter the intent of men, the message of God will not return void, yet I can’t help but wonder how much more of a reach and blessing would be bestoyed by God’s Word not being watered down with look-a-like trash from the world. No matter the message the preacher brought, with God the tribute should be holy before him or it will not be accepted, blessed, or bear fruit. Good intentions don’t make things right. Bring the message, but make it what it is… the Word of God and leave it plain and pure and simple that a child might see and understand. God is not mixed of message or are his ways full of confusion.
Another Seeker Friendly Church on steroids!
Recently overheard remarks made by a newcomer that was observed praise/dancing near the moshpit at NewSprings.
“How’d they get that brimstone fragrence I smell piped in here”?
Caleb, I can appreciate why your church would try to do this, but there is a way to deal with the issues of sex which exceeds them all. Check it, from a friend of Mark Driscoll: “One of the main reasons that the world and the church are awash in lust and pornography, fornication, adultery, masturbation, exhibitionism, homosexuality, bestiality, rape, and endless sexual innuendo in all media—one of the reasons we are awash in all this is that our lives are intellectually and emotionally disconnected from infinite, soul-staggering grandeur. Inside and outside the church we are drowning in a sea of triviality, pettiness, banality, and silliness. Television is trivial. Radio is trivial. Conversation is trivial. Education is trivial. Christian books are trivial. Worship styles are trivial. It is inevitable that the human heart, which was made to be staggered with terrifyingly joyous dread and peace by an infinitely untouchable, embracing God—it is inevitable that such a heart, drowning in the all-pervasive, blurry boredom of banal entertainment, will reach for the best buzz that life can give: sex.” — John Piper (Source, emphasis added)
I would like to say firstly that also do not agree with this. And I find it hypocritical that in series like this we tell young men to guard their hearts and somehow demonstrate this point by displaying lustful material. I was at a church two weeks ago that did the very same thing. I’m 20 years old, so I’m on the front line of this, and yes, I disagree with the means. Ephesians 5:11-13, I believe there’s a difference between exposing darkness, and exposing youth to darkness.
One person said “Just teach them God’s word. It will not come back void, but your slick packaging WILL.” I find this very true and agree with it.
However, to the people outright bashing this church and it leaders I would say a few things.
1. Are you being loving in your approach to this? Is demanding repentance from these leaders really the way to go about it? I think not. Especially when you aren’t using and scripture to back your claims.
2. To people who say “This doesn’t Look a thing like Church” I would say; what are you talking about? If you mean this doesn’t look anything like the church building you enter into and worship in on Sunday morning, then I would say… well, that’s just not biblical. If you one of the things you are judging this is based off appearance, then I would say the “church” you walk into on Sunday morning looks nothing like that of the bible… unless you worship with a group of people in your house everyday (Acts 2:42-47). The church is a classification of the redeemed, not a building. While I do like that Spurgeon quote, maybe scripture would be a more appropriate way to back your claims.
3. To the person who claimed “Packaging is EVERYTHING! Nowadays, the nature of the packaging is just as important, if not more so, than the product inside.” I would respectfully disagree quoting Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” So packaging means NOTHING. Yes, we should be careful in the way we present the gospel, in truth. But saying it is just as important and maybe “more so” is doing a grave disservice to both the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.
All that to say, I do not agree with this presentation. And I agree just as much with most of your responses. Lets encourage and correct each other in love with scripture.
I honestly came into this site thinking it is so sad to see how God’s place be dirtied, but I think God’s Word was preached. I think there are different approaches to this, but Jesus is the focus of the message, the Gospel is preached (as he stated from Genesis). Personally think it is a risky approach but I hope people understand the message.
Mr. Jordon,
There is a reason that so many people are speaking out against this. You should consider their warnings. You WILL give an account of yourself before a Holy and Righteous God. Please consider your actions.
I came here from another site, more intrigued than anything. I have to say, the message was great–God focused and practical. I’m not sure about the intro, but it makes a point.
oh man. i was at the services for the sexed series at NewSpring Church. You guys should have seen how many middle schoolers and high schoolers gave their lives to Christ and are now rebels against the sin that the world has called acceptable. the kids in those services are legit and love Christ more than anything because someone had the balls to call out what is in this world and defeat it with scripture. preach.
might i add, that opener is sick. in the best of ways. 3d magazine covers are the jam. and if the girl on the cover is dressed too provocative for you, i suggest you go to an all boys school, and live in an all boys community for the entirety of your life. also, the youth that watched this opener are fully aware of where they are, which is a bible preaching house of God, and additionally understand appropriate use of sarcasm. written & spoken. out.
Micah,
“Packaging is EVERYTHING! Nowadays, the nature of the packaging is just as important, if not more so, than the product inside.” .., in the WORLD. This quote has nothing to do with the word of God or the Spirit of God. This is how the WORLD operates and the churches have so embraced a worldly spirit that the Madison Avenue packaging fits right into it. The world looks at it and laughs at the church. Young believers look at it and get confused; or worse, don’t see anything wrong.
Evidently, BCoop thinks the only “message” that’s being received in all of this is the one he gives halfway thru the video. Me thinks there’s lots of folks who never watch the video that far but that doesn’t mean they are not getting a message.
Cool to see so many varied opinions… regardless of your thoughts here… i bet you will all enjoy: http://www.bradcooper.us/?p=635
@ “That Guy”
Dude, praise God for salvations. But the intro and backdrop has jack squat to do with the Holy Spirit moving in a teen’s heart.
We shouldn’t be sarcastic about a serious issue such as lust, and for the ones who didn’t lust after the girl on the cover–awesome you have eyes that I have yet to receive. But young horny boys do not likely have those eyes, why would we make provisions for our flesh?
Peace and Grace.
Jesus turned the money changers tables over because they were selling in HIS Father’s house. Do you really think HE would approve of this? Jesus said, “I’am the same today, yesterday and tomorrow!”….What a sad day for the church!
Matt,
I assume I am one of the “young horny boys” you are referring to and I feel the need to stick up for myself after your irrational assumption. I was at the service that night, and every other one in the “Sexed” series, and not once did I lust over the woman on the magazine cover who showed no skin other than the tops of her shoulders and her face. I actually felt a lot of conviction prior to the message and soon after prayed and begged God to help keep me pure. The series did a lot for me, not to mention a number of my friends who prayed along side me, so before you start to criticize another Church’s methods of reaching its students, please consider the reason they do what they do: to allow their students to have a change of heart.
Think about it this way Matt, the message may not have appealed to you. But maybe it was not necessarily spoken solely for you to hear. It did wonders for me and thank God for speaking though Brad that night as he did.
Peace and Grace
Michael,
Dude, praise God for your conviction and I my self am a horny young adult, who has struggled with porn and sexual sins since I was 13–I’m no stranger to it. My argument was not that the spirt can’t movie in media but, a lot of teens and adults struggle with the sin of lust and why would we provide even the temptation. Just because it is a temptation for you doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be for another person in the audience.
I’m awesome that the message was good. I never mentioned anything negative about him or his content.
Peace and Grace.
Im sorry to hear about your struggle, and Im not saying I am perfect by any means. Believe me, I’m no stranger to sexual sin either. I struggle with lust just as much as the next guy. All I was trying to say is that picture did not appeal to me in any way, nor did I think it could anyone else, but i guess you’re right; Lust is different for everyone.
Dude, I’ll be praying for you.
Thanks for the good discussion.
The introductory clip, in my opinion, is an eye-opener for me. All of us–myself included–have struggled with lust at some point in our lives. I think those who lusted after this woman were affected the most by Brad’s message. Why? The level of conviction after such a demonstration is much greater–let me explain. Once one realizes they have committed sexual sin from such an image, they may realize what they’ve been doing all along hasn’t been so harmless after all. My point is that by showing these potentially provocative images, Christians feel a deep level of conviction for their sexual impurity.
God does not leave us alone to struggle with the world’s temptation, as he states in 1 Corinthians: “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13
Don’t get me wrong here: I do agree with some that such a display could cause an adolescent–or any other for that matter–to lust, I believe arguing about such a matter is no better than sending false pretenses. In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul pleads, “Now, dear brothers and sisters, I appeal to you by the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ to stop arguing among yourselves. Let there be real harmony so there won’t be divisions in the church. I plead with you to be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.”
Both sides are correct, but each is fighting for a different purpose. Perry Noble and Brad have a burning passion for Christ and have realized the need for a deeper, Bible-centered message. Traditional churches and NewSpring are teaching the word of God to spread the gospel; they are united in purpose. But I was raised as a young child in a traditional church. I respected the message, but I never had the revelation of “I should be paying attention to this stuff so others can see Christ in me.” Not until I went to NewSpring. My eyes were opened to the number of kids in my school–even churched–who claimed to follow Christ but spoke and acted otherwise. After speaking with them about NewSpring, many restated what their parents, friends, or the media might have told them: it’s a cult, the word of God is not preached, etc. All I can say is what a shame. Children and adults are listening to the media about this church, when visiting could mean turning their life around. The sad thing? It’s the church that has created such rumors. It’s like our good friend Honest Abe told us, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
I will sum up with a passage and a question: “You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” – Hebrews 5:12-14
And so I ask: what is the purpose of a church catering to the needs of the youth? Mature, biblical sermons, or those same sermons translated into words a teenager could relate to and implement?
Love to see other youth ministries kicking butt. Good job guys!!!
I thought since im another one of those horny young adults, Id throw my two cents in. I believe that sex has consumed everything in our world. Its is the major struggle between young adults today. If the church does not address this issue who will? Its because of this message that many lives have been changed.
Tony,
The discussion wasn’t about the content of the message, at least I wasn’t talk about the message.
Cory,
Dude, I’m glad your life is being transformed. But having a temptation for anyone on display is wrong in a church setting (which I think you might agree with, you weren’t extremely clear.) But I agree, if we stop looking down on our youth and set high expectations–the solid food will come.
Grace and Peace.
Current, relivant, and vital information was given! Not to mention that Jesus’ name was lifted high in message and in song. I am between the ages of 40 and 50 and I found the complete service fantastic! Sometimes shocking the audience gets their attention and you did it in such a way that it gave truthful info without losing integrity! No flesh was seen except for arms, face, and some leg on the pseudo magazine cover. It brings to mind what REALLY is on most young people’s minds(and older)…and shows the need for repentance and points the way to the cross. Honesty & truthfulness by conviction of the Holy Spirit always brings conflict and persecution…and contrary to the previous nay-sayers, I say well done! God Bless You All!
Perhaps the speaker in the red shirt would do well to continue reading in Romans 12…. verse 2 instructs us to “…be not conformed to this world…” Every last thing in this service reeks of worldliness and spiritual immaturity and blindness.
Matt,
I do need to clarify myself a bit. Based on what everyone has been saying, they have led me to believe the woman on the magazine cover was portrayed in a sexually tempting way. It has been a few weeks since I had seen this message, so I couldn’t completely remember the intro clip.
However, after viewing it again, I do have to agree with Donna in that no flesh was exposed except for the arms, face, and legs. I do not think this was portrayed in a way that immediately screams “sex appeal,” but dressed in an acceptable manner that showed no harm to minds young and old. I also believe that the level of lustful temptation is interpreted by the viewer: as a young male, I see no harm in the way she was being portrayed. Yes, if she were in a swimsuit or any other revealing clothing, it would most likely tempt others to lust, but in this situation, I think there is nothing wrong.
I’d also like to reference back to Michael’s comment, where he said lust is different for everyone. As for the judgement of a church, I think it was a safe decision that such a picture would not lead a teenager to become sexually impure.
Cory,
I understand that, but coming from a porn addict for almost 8 years I can lust after a woman completely clothed. That part aside, why would we be sarcastic as sin–and even display them as sarcastic. And yes she was displayed in a sexual manner, not necessarily her body, but with the headlines behind her. In media the person represents the message the ad is giving. I understand it is sarcasm, but we cannot be sarcastic about difficult sin like lust.
Grace and Peace.
We, as people, all struggle with the sin nature at times. “For the heart is desperately wicked, who can understand it?” “For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” These verses helps us to understand the plight of man and why staying in God’s word is necessary. It also says, “He who is not with me is against me & he who does not gather with me, scatters.” This church has a different approach to bring people the good news…it’s radical & unreligious, praise God.
“Religion” tells us what we can & can’t do and I believe most are apt to apply this philosophy in measuring what’s right or wrong. God’s law has not been broken; sin has NOT been committed. What may be a struggle with others concerning lust and so on, is dependent on that person’s personal relationship to Christ and HIS heart. If one struggles with gluttony, should the church stop him from going to the church’s supper in fear that they will make him stumble? Sin is committed once the heart has succumbed in that direction. Be careful of being “RELIGIOUS.”
I love you caleb!
Haha thanks!
Just as a newcomer to these sorts of sites, would all of you throw yourselves at me like rabid dogs if I started arguing against this sort of moralistic, therapeutic, deism as a theology student?
Cooper has such a good beard. O jealousy.
BCooP please explain to me why you use the curse acronym BAMF? How does this glorify Jesus Christ? Where is the Scriptures that say we can use foul acronyms and word to reach people for Jesus?
What goes in must come out. When you put sin in the church as glorifying God, that sin as seen in this video, will destroy people. The Bible says
Titus 2:11-14 (NASB)
2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,
12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
Also pastors are commanded to do the following:
Titus 1:5-9 (NASB)
1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,
6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion.
7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,
8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
and
1 Timothy 3:1-7 (NASB)
3:1 It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.
2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.
4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity
5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),
6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.
7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Where does BAMF come into these requirements? Please explain your actions.
You can not mix light with darkness. Sin is sin and rebellion is rebellion no matter how you and New Spring wraps it. You can use your numbers and the number of people who profess Jesus as your “ends” but this does not cover the sin you are presenting as o.k in the house of God. So what it 200 teens said they accepted Christ? That is good but you are teaching these new Christians the following:
1. The ends justify the means. It’s ok to present sin as long as you present Jesus.
2. Use can use terms like BAMF, see these lustful images, listen to rap, etc…. It’s ok because Jesus is King and He is your Lord.
3. You are not grounding these people in the final authority of God’s Word. You are teaching them to buck God’s Word and exist in “gray” areas. When someone points out a problem using the Scriptures, you are teaching them to point to the “good” works of NewSpring and FUSE in order to cover your clear rebellion against the Word of God.
1 John 2:15-17 (NASB)
2:15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
BAMF?
If you reply I would like your Scriptures to justify your worldly speech and images. I do not want your good works, good deeds, church numbers, and the numbers who profess Jesus. God is not into democracy so popular consensus does not count as Scripture.
Like I said before what goes into your mind will come out. This is why God warned us to be not of the world and that we are new creations. If we follow the world, partake of the world, fill our minds with the language of the world, etc.. then the world will destroy us. Yes, we live in the world and sin is all around, but we are not to glorify it(yes Perry Noble your pastor has said many times he listens to Eminem while working out)by showing it the the church.
I attended New Spring for 8 months. When I opened my eyes to the destructive rebellion being taught there I took my family and left. New Spring is teaching a dangerous mixture of light and darkness all covered up by New Springs numbers and good works. The problem is the Bible warns the church about this sinful mixture. All the good works and deeds in the world will never pardon this sin with God.
My suggestion for BCoop is to repent and follow God’s clear instructions as found in the Bible.
